Best way to make a long-distance relationship work

Last Update : January 19, 2017

One of the main advantages of online dating is that you can meet like-minded singles anywhere: you can find your potential partner living in your area, in nearby cities or even in places outside Australia, but when it comes to having a serious relationship offline, distance can really take a toll.

Being in a long-distance relationship is very complex, and it seems that love sometimes is not enough. Proof of that is this week’s split up announcement from of one the most notorious couples that came together in the TV program, “Married at First Sight” (Mark and Christie). The pair blamed distance as being the main reason why they put their relationship to an end.

If you are seriously involved with someone who lives far away, here we give you some suggestions on how to make your long-distance relationship work.

#Communication is key

As you cannot see each other very often (every day or in a weekly basis), it is very important to try communicate with your partner regularly, without being too dependent on it.

Keep things honest, and trust each other. Whenever you can, keep your loved one updated about what it is going on in your life. Make your partner feel that, in spite the distance, he/she really is part of your life.

Another nice thing to do is to send morning, and night messages, and whenever it is possible have video calls. This will make your significant other feel closer to you.

#Visit/surprise each other once in a while

In any conventional relationship, you would need to surprise you partner once in a while with a romantic dinner or a spontaneous getaway, for example, in order to avoid monotony.

In long-distance relationships you usually need to go the extra mile, and be more creative to show you are thinking about the other one. Once in a while, you can puzzle him/her with a home-made gift, a surprise visit or even a love letter.

Make sure you visit each other regularly as well.

#Plan a future together

In your conversations ensure that you talk about building a future together. You can even set a date to move together as this is a good way to show that this is for real, and not something that is destined to remain in the distance forever. Planning on your moving in together will keep you both entertained, and help you to think less in the distance itself.

#Avoid temptations

Make sure to avoid situations where you may be tempted to cheat. Distance does not give you carte blanche to do whatever you want, just because your partner is not present to know what happens between you, and a third person.

If you are the kind of person that gets too flirty when going out with some friends, and have a couple of drinks, then make sure to put yourself some limits.
